IBI Group Recognized for Innovative Design of
Women’s College Hospital Redevelopment

– Multiple award wins affirm strength of global Healthcare+ practice –

TORONTO, ON (January 30, 2016) – A global architecture, engineering and intelligence firm with more than 2,500 employees, IBI Group has a rich history in the healthcare sector, providing innovative design solutions for treatment and care facilities around the world. Together with healthcare teams, patients, and the public, IBI Group’s Healthcare+ practice strives to create the best possible healthcare outcomes in the built environment. The firm’s innovative architectural design of Women’s College Hospital Redevelopment in Toronto recently garnered recognition, adding to an existing roster of successfully delivered healthcare projects in 2016. Women’s College Hospital (WCH) is the first patient-centred ambulatory care hospital in Ontario, and now a pre-eminent academic ambulatory hospital and world leader in women’s health.

In late 2016, Women’s College Hospital received The Silver Award for Project Development from the Canadian Council for Private Public Partnerships (CCPPP). The CCPPP judiciary panel was impressed with the comprehensive community and neighbourhood involvement in the design process.

Additionally, IBI Group Project Architect David Wood, along with joint venture partner Perkins Eastman Black, accompanied the Executive Vice-President of Patient Care & Ambulatory Innovation at WCH to Orlando to accept the 2016 Generative Space Award for A Place to Flourish. Judges commented that the design acknowledged “the health gaps and barriers women face accessing the healthcare they need… to minimize apprehension and provide both integrated and wellness care.” The award focuses on projects that improve human health through the innovative design of environments, which as a result, allow individuals, organizations and communities to flourish.

IBI Group began working on the complex delivery of Women’s College Hospital Redevelopment in 2010. “Among our key objectives was the desire to increase the hospital’s physical presence and engagement within the community,” said IBI Project Architect David Wood. “We were able to maximize future flexibility and adaptability, combining thorough research and careful planning of multi-use exam/treatment rooms for different care teams inside the iconic building.”

Described as a hospital intended to keep people out of the hospital, this state-of-the-art facility focuses on consolidating primary care, chronic disease management, surgical services, diagnostics, and mental health programs, all delivered on an ambulatory and out-patient basis.

Other notable IBI Group global Healthcare+ projects that received awards in 2016 include: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital & Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow; and community mental health facility, Woodland View, in Ayrshire, Scotland.
